From a typical immigrant’s perspective, this is not an easy time in New Zealand. Maybe it has never truly been easy, but right now? It feels even harder.
Trying to get an entry-level job feels like a trap. You are either told you are underqualified or overqualified. Don’t even get me started with when you want a promotion. You get stuck in a loop. You start to doubt yourself, your path, and even your decision to move here.
If you feel like this, you are not alone. Many people are frustrated, tired, and unsure. But I want to remind you that it is okay to feel that way. And more importantly, it is possible to rise above it. To move forward.
Tough times never last, but tough people do.
— Dr. Robert H. Schuller
Because here’s the truth: even in this tough economic climate, there are people who are succeeding. They are climbing the corporate ladder like it’s a gym workout—difficult, yes, but achievable with the right routine. They are making bold moves and growing in their careers. Building wealth. It is not just luck. It is strategy.
Sometimes you need to pause and ask yourself the hard questions.
- Is my current approach working?
- Am I applying the right strategy for where I am and where I want to be?
- Is my mindset helping or holding me back?
- Do I need to change my environment or my circle of influence?
- Do I need to learn new skills or adapt the ones I already have?
- Am I limiting myself by thinking that if it’s not a “carer job”, it doesn’t count — when stepping stones can come in many forms?
Maybe New Zealand is not the right fit for your specific skills. That is a valid realisation. Remember, you migrated once. You can do it again, if you need to. What matters is being honest with yourself and assessing your situation with a clear and open mind. Otherwise, you risk wasting time stuck in the wrong place or mindset.
The truth is, people are succeeding here. Watch what they are doing. Learn from them. Apply what works for you. That’s what a growth mindset looks like.
It is okay to complain, vent, or feel discouraged, but DO NOT live in that space. Find a sustainable way forward. Don’t let your emotions rewrite your plans. Let your strategy guide you, not your mood.
You have what it takes.
